Gerald Schattle tipped the scales at a robust 397 pounds when he made the unexpected decision to run a marathon. His doctors ordered him to lose 100 pounds before his training could begin. Against all odds, he eventually completed a marathon. He didn’t set any speed records, but for him, finishing was the goal.
Gerald Schattle finished the race. He met his goal.
Mr. Schattle understood what is known as BHAG – big, hairy, audacious goals. His enormous achievement was made possible by one thing. He aimed high. He set a goal, and then went for that goal.
That’s where greatness begins – with a goal to do something no one else expects us to do. “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5).
Here’s your job. Set a BHAG for your personal sobriety.
Recovery Step: Set a goal for your recovery. Then do whatever is necessary is fulfill that goal.
