In the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby, in 2009, jockey Calvin Borel rode Mine That Bird to a most unexpected victory. A 50-1 long shot, the horse was running dead last until the final turn.
No race was ever won before the final turn. You may not be winning right now, but the outcome is still to be determined.
Paul spoke with confidence: “I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns” (Philippians 1:6).
In his book, Finishing Strong, Dan Green offers seven keys to winning the race.
- Goals that are measurable
- Commitment that is unshakable
- Purpose that is definable
- Patience that is undeniable
- Passion that is transferable
- Strength that is sustainable
- Integrity that is accountable
Recovery Step: Run hard until the final turn. Then run harder.
