It happened 50 years ago today.
It was like every other Sunday for my brother and me. We rode the church bus to College Park Baptist Church in southwest Houston. After the service, I asked our pastor, Dr. Cecil Sewell, if we could talk for a few minutes. He and his wife Sharon took me into his office, along with my brother.
“How can I help you?” my pastor asked.
I said, “I’m not sure I know God. I want to be sure.”
For the next 30 minutes, Dr. Sewell shared four verses from the Book of Romans. The last verse was this one: “Whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
With that, we all prayed. With my pastor’s help, I trusted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. That was 50 years ago today – a day I shall never forget, and a day for which I will eternally give thanks.
Recovery Step: Step 2 reminds us that there is a power greater than ourselves that can restore us to sanity. Do what I did 50 years ago. Call on that Power today.
