In 1900, a survey was conducted. Americans were asked to list their basic needs. The average response consisted of 72 things. In 1950, this survey was repeated. This time, on average, Americans said they needed over 500 things.
I can’t imagine how many things would be added to that list today. Here are ten, to get us started:
- Microwave
- Air conditioning
- Television
- Cable TV
- Laptop
- Social media
- Internet
- Wi-fi
- Smartphone
- Tylenol PM
Times have changed – a lot. The Bible identified two basic needs. “If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that” (1 Timothy 6:8). What does it take for you to be content? May I humbly suggest that your smartphone, 500 television channels, and Facebook account are not needs.
What you do need is connection. You need sobriety. You need authenticity. You need faith, family, and friends. You need a simpler lifestyle and a humble heart.
Recovery Step: Embrace the things you really need. Let the rest go.
