Jesus quoted from Lincoln’s 1858 speech when he said, “A house divided cannot stand” (Matthew 12:25).
Nothing matters more than unity. That is why Jesus prayed, in what really was the Lord’s Prayer (a prayer he prayed himself, not a model prayer for us), “Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one” (John 17:11).
Henri Nouwen explained, “One of the main tasks of theology is to find words that do not divide but unite, that do not create conflict but unity, that do not hurt but heal.”
Think about that the next time you step into the midst of a conflict. Whenever you see a fire, you can pour water or lighter fluid on it. And when you see interpersonal conflict, you can add to the hurt or to the healing.
Recovery Step: Spread unity in the body of Christ, your recovery group, and wherever you go.
