Sobriety is not your goal. At least, it shouldn’t be. Your goal should not be abstinence – from unwanted sexual behavior or any other sin. So what is the goal?
In a word, transformation.
We are commanded to “be transformed” (Romans 12:2). We must be “born again” (John 3:7). Every man in Christ is a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
We all should seek to be sober, one day at a time. But we must aim higher than that. What the Holy Spirit is out to do in your life and in my life is nothing short of a complete overhaul.
As a young adult, I drove a pretty bad car. Unless you’re into rust, oil leaks, and a faulty radiator. Eventually, the engine conked out (mechanical lingo). I had a decision to make – rebuild the engine for a lot of money, or get a new engine for even more money. I took the less expensive option. A couple of months later, I bought a new car.
God doesn’t want to rebuild your engine. He wants to give you a whole new motor.
Recovery Step: Ask God for a complete transformation.
