Can you name the only U.S. president to receive a warrant for speeding, while in office?
Ulysses S. Grant.
The president was spotted on the streets of Washington, D.C., going too fast – on his horse. Police officer William H. West pulled him over and issued a warning. The next day, West caught him again. President Grant was riding his horse as fast as ever, this time resulting in an arrest. Grant had to put up $20, rather than going to jail. He never showed up for his trial.
“Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful desires will harvest the consequences of decay and death” (Galatians 6:7).
Though just $20, even the President of the United States had to pay for his “crime.”
Robert Louis Stevenson said, “Sooner or later everyone sits down to a banquet of consequences.”
Recovery Step: Embrace the upside of consequences. In the words of B.F. Skinner, “The consequences of an act affect the probability of its occurring again.”
