You’ve probably read the same surveys I’ve read. Famous people of all stripes are often asked, “If you could spend time with one person from history, who would it be?” The most common response is always the same: Jesus. By a wide margin, people say they wish they could spend time with Jesus, in the flesh.
That’s what makes this verse so interesting:
“Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region” (Matthew 8:34).
The very people who needed Jesus the most wanted him to go away. In fact, they pleaded with him to go away.
Why?
Too many people prefer the problem they know over the solution they don’t.
I see it all the time. Men and women mired in addiction try (and fail) to secure sobriety on their own. Then Jesus shows up, ready to help. Still, many reject the true Higher Power. And they wonder why they can’t stay sober.
Recovery Step: Jesus is knocking at your door. Don’t turn him away.
