We are all familiar with Amber alerts, in America. These are alerts that go out over everyone’s smartphones, notifying us that someone has suddenly gone missing. But where did Amber alerts begin?
The girl behind the Amber alerts was Amber Hagerman, a nine-year-old Girl Scout from Arlington, Texas. She was kidnapped while riding her bike on January 13, 1996. Despite a massive search, Amber was never seen alive again. Her body was found five days later, about four miles from the site of her abduction. Her killer was never found.
As horrific as was the loss of this precious little girl, this sparked something positive. Because of Amber’s loss and the response of those closest to her, untold numbers of others have been saved.
God takes that which is destructive and indescribably painful and makes something good out of it. That doesn’t erase the pain of the loss, but it does make for a better future.
The Bible says, “Come and see the works of God, who is awesome in his deeds toward man” (Psalm 66:5).
