There are several baseball records that will never be broken: Rickey Henderson’s 1,406 stolen bases, Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak, and Nolan Ryan’s seven no-hitters, to name a few.
But the record of records belongs to Cy Young. Over his 20-year career, Young pitched an incredible 749 complete games. That is more than the 200 starting pitchers in Major League Baseball in 2021 – combined. Cy Young completed 92% of all games he started, which came to 37 games per year. By comparison, last season, not a single pitcher tossed more than three complete games.
There’s something to be said for completing what you start. Unfortunately, we see a lot of men and women start off really well with their recovery. But they don’t finish what they started.
The measure of success is not how you start, but how you finish.
Recovery Step: Do what Paul did. He “fought the good fight and finished the race” (2 Timothy 4:7). He pitched a complete game.
