On this date in 1842, anesthesia was used for the first time, in an operation by American surgeon Dr. Crawford Long. But he did not publish his success for seven years, so the world didn’t know what he had done until 1849.
Imagine living in the “good old days.” Days without electricity, running water, cars, airplanes, smartphones, and anesthesia.
Especially anesthesia.
Over my life, I have used anesthesia several times – seven kidney stone surgeries, several colonoscopies, countless oral surgeries, skin cancer removals, and the mother of all surgeries – my quintuple open heart bypass surgery two years ago.
Each surgery was made possible by anesthesia.
Similarly, God provides healing for our souls, from our addictions, and from our pasts. He promises, “I will restore you to health and heal your wounds” (Jeremiah 30:17).
Recovery Step: Let God do for you what no one else can do. He will provide recovery and healing. The process won’t be painless, but it will hurt a lot less than it should.
