George Carlin said it well: “In the United States, anybody can be president. That’s the problem.”
Carlin’s point is well taken. In America – and many other countries – a person becomes the sum total of his decisions. If he strings together enough wise decisions, he will enjoy the intended outcome.
But what about addiction? The Virginia Center for Addiction Medicine says, “It is rare to find a nationally recognized addiction recovery organization that views addiction as a choice rather than a disease. The person who chooses to use the drug may do so willingly, but they do not wish to become addicted.”
I like to say it like this – falling into addiction is not a decision you made, but staying there is. So, regardless how you got here (addiction), the next move is yours.
Recovery Step: Jesus said it can become our will to do God’s will (John 7:17). And we know God’s will is that you find freedom. And you can – one decision at a time.
