Dr. Denison was a senior pastor for over 30 years, NBA chaplain, and board chairman at Houston Baptist University three times. Happiness

A recent Psychology Today article describes happiness as “an electrifying and elusive state.” The writer offers research that suggests that happiness is not as much tied to our circumstances as it is to our state of mind.  Marcus Aurelius agreed: “The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.”  Scripture offers several…

Billy’s Prayer

Billy had been misbehaving and was sent to his room. After a while, he emerged and told his mother that he had thought it over and had said a prayer. “Fine,” said his mother. “If you ask God to help you to not misbehave, he will help you.” Billy said, “Oh, I didn’t ask God…

Tests

The battle for sobriety can be viewed in one of two ways. You can see it as a temptation from the enemy that sets you up for failure. Or you can see it as a test from the Father that sets you up for success. As I remember my academic career, I fondly recall those…

300 Cockroaches

A woman went into a pet store and asked for 300 cockroaches. The shop owner said, “I can do that, but if you don’t mind me asking, why on earth would you want 300 cockroaches?” The woman replied, “Well, I’m moving today, and my lease says I must leave the place in the same condition…

The Eyes Have It

It is true that what you take in through your eyes will affect your brain. But the opposite is also true. What you have already stored in your brain will affect what you look at.  Neurologist and author Richard Restak wrote, “What the eye sees is determined by what the brain has learned.”  There is…
