Stanford professor Robert Sapolsky reports on a study conducted across cultures. It found that, universally, men tend to prefer to marry women younger than themselves, while women prefer men older than themselves. There were several other interesting findings. But the most profound conclusion was that across cultures, men and women are looking for one thing in a mate more than anything else.
They want someone who will be nice to them.
You know the marriage verse as well as I do: “Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband” (Ephesians 5:33).
We can break this verse down forever. God tells men to love their wives, while he tells women to respect their husbands. Apparently, women need love and men need respect. But the message is really much simpler than that. To both spouses, God is saying this . . .
Just be nice.
Recovery Step: Be nice to your husband or wife today. If you aren’t married, be nice to someone else.
