Life is unpredictable. Don’t take my word for it; Solomon said, “At best, life is unpredictable” (Ecclesiastes 9:7).
The great philosopher Forrest Gump said it in a way we can all understand. “My mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
– Forrest Gump, 1994
You know something else that is a box of chocolates?
Recovery.
There are days filled with dark caramels (yum!). Other days, you bite into a piece of coconut, dressed up like pure chocolate (yuk!). The answer, George Patton said, was to “prepare for the unknown.” Prepare for the next trigger, test, and temptation. Prepare for what might be around the next turn. Not every turn in the road is manned by demons, but some are.
The answer is to prepare, stay sober, and keep working your program. That way, when you bite into a hunk of coconut, you’ll be ready.
Recovery Step: Do the work on the front in so that when your temptation comes, you’ll be ready.
