One of the marks of the Christian walk is uncertainty. The nature of the spiritual life is that we are certain of our uncertainty.
Scripture confirms this: “It has not yet been revealed what we shall be” (1 John 3:2).
Let me say it like this. Certainty is the mark of common sense life, while gracious uncertainty is the mark of the spiritual life.
Here are a few things of which I am not certain:
- My long-term health
- How long I will live
- Challenges to my sobriety
- What others think of me
Living in uncertainty can be a threat to recovery. We want things laid out on a pathway we can clearly see. But sometimes, God doesn’t want us to see the pathway. He’d rather that we look at him.
Recovery Step: Embrace the certainty of the uncertainty of life. And embrace the one who has already been where you are going.
