In 1998, Case Western Reserve University conducted an interesting study on self-control. Participants were surrounded by fresh chocolate chip cookies but were told to resist the temptation and eat radishes instead. While they followed this directive, it took a toll. As their activities were monitored in the following hours, it was found that they lacked focus, and their capacity to function and make wise decisions was diminished for a few hours.
Dr. Roy Baumeister, who directed the research, concluded, “Self-control gets used up and needs time to be replenished before you use it again.”
That’s the thing about self-control. It always gets used up. That’s why every addict fails in his own strength. And that is where the supernatural power of God enters the picture.
Paul wrote, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Recovery Step: When temptation hits, practice self-control. And if you are in short supply, seek the filling and power of the Holy Spirit.
