“When you move past self, life is simpler and less stressful.” (Tom Rath, It’s Not About You)
In 1543, the Polish polymath Nicolaus Copernicus published a book that identified the sun as the center of our solar system. Until that point, it was widely assumed that everything in the universe revolved around the earth. Copernicus’s heliocentric cosmology turned the world upside down and inside out.
All of us need what I would call a Copernican revolution. Why? We are way too self-centered.
When we’re babies, our parents feed us, burp us, and change our diapers. The world revolves around us. And that’s okay. For a while.
Eventually, we need to grow up. If we are to find sobriety that really lasts, we must move to the 12th Step. We must help others.
Recovery Step: “Honor Christ and put others first” (Ephesians 5:21).
