Here’s a key to recovery you have never heard before . . .
You need to create a better past.
We’ve all heard it a million times: “Create a better future.” But how do you do that? I suggest that the best way to create a better future is by creating a better past. By that, I mean stay sober for the next 24 hours. If you do that, you will wake up tomorrow with a better past. Do that for a week, and your past will be even better.
One of the things that fuels our addiction or our recovery is our remembered past. By creating a past that is full of right decisions, sober living, and spiritual connections, we have something to draw on going forward.
So yes, you need a better future. But in order to have that better future, you need to create a better past.
Recovery Step: Jesus said, “Take no thought for tomorrow” (Matthew 6:34). But he never said, “Take no thought for yesterday.” So today, live a sober life, make wise choices, and do the next right thing. In the process, you will create a better past.
