There is an interesting phrase in the Book of Genesis. Cain had just had his offering to God rejected on grounds that are not completely clear. But it was the downward spiral that followed that is of interest to us.
God told Cain, “If you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door” (Genesis 4:7). Within nine verses, Cain had killed his brother (4:8), and then he “went out from the presence of God” (4:16).
Here’s the lesson: sin unchecked leads to really bad things. Now, substitute the word “addiction” for “sin.” Addiction is crouching at your door.
The answer is to engage recovery every single day for the rest of your life. Otherwise, the addiction that is crouching at your door will inevitably find its way inside.
Brittany Burgunder wrote, “Recovery is hard. Regret is harder.” So do the hard work of recovery. You’ll be so glad that you did.
Recovery Step: Addiction is crouching at your door. Do everything you can to keep that door shut.
