Recovery can be an emotional journey at times. I cried when I was discovered. I cried when I attended my first SAA meeting. I cried in front of my therapist. I cried throughout my disclosure. I cried when I got my 30-day chip. I cried when I got my one-year chip. I cry – a lot.
If you cry from time to time, you are in good company. Here are just a few criers from the Bible.
- Jacob (Genesis 29:11)
- Joseph (Genesis 42:24)
- David (1 Samuel 20:41)
- Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:3)
- Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1:40
- Mordecai (Esther 4:1)
- Brave men (Isaiah 33:7)
- Jonah (Jonah 2:2)
- Jeremiah (Lamentations 2:11)
- Peter (Matthew 26:75)
- Paul (Philippians 3:18)
Still not convinced that crying is okay? Add this man to your list – Jesus. Yes, “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). Bottling up your emotions is not good for you or your recovery. Letting them out is a good thing. So if you feel like crying sometimes, do it!
Recovery Step: Refusing to express your emotions is a major contributor to addiction. Letting those emotions out may be the most important thing you can do.
