I’m going to tell you how to vote.
This is election day in the United States. It’s finally here – the day when our national divisions and endless disputes rise to the top. For 24 hours, life stands still. Tonight, when the tallies come, we will learn who we will get to criticize for the next four years. Until then, about 150 million of us will go to the polls to select our next president, senator, congressman, governor, and the all-important city clerk.
For sure, these are all weighty decisions. But they are not the weightiest decisions you will ever make.
On the short list of weighty decisions is this one: What will you do about your addiction?
When we vote for our leaders, we exercise our best judgment. (I know, that’s scary.) But when it comes to recovery, we really need to look to our Higher Power. We follow the counsel of King Solomon, who said, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Recovery Step: Today, I nominate 24 hours of sobriety. Let’s make it a unanimous vote.
