On this date in 1776, America was born. While we have readers from over 20 different countries, I think we can all agree that the American experiment has turned out pretty well, for the most part. But while I will join millions of others in celebrating our independence today, I recognize that God is not American.
God’s plan is wider, deeper, and more redemptive than that.
The Bible says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: and the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance” (Psalm 33:12).
I think Billy Graham had it right when he said that God would bless America once America blesses God. The same principle holds true for recovery. The greatest prize is reserved for the one who seeks God and does the serious work of sobriety.
Recovery Step: Freedom is a choice more than a condition. Regardless of which country is your home today, you can find freedom from your addiction, if you have the right God.
