My favorite sports are: American football, basketball, and baseball. In the first two of those sports, I’m amazed at the ability of athletes to play through injuries. With baseball, not so much.
Here are just a few ways baseball players injured themselves badly enough to have to miss dozens of games.
- Sammy Sosa missed three weeks due to a back injury caused by sneezing too hard.
- Mariano Rivera threw his back out, trying to tie his own shoes.
- John Smoltz burned himself by ironing his shirt, while wearing it.
- Johnny Damon injured his back getting into a car.
I think the lesson here is that any of us can get hurt at just about any time. Applying that to daily life, Paul warned, “Be careful, lest you fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12).
Recovery Step: It doesn’t take much to get hurt. It doesn’t take much to get into trouble. And it doesn’t take much to be diligent – every day.
