Addiction is a horrible professor. It teaches us to do things that leave irreparable damage. Lesson 1 is this – “Body, obey your emotions.”
Recovery, on the other hand, is a master teacher. It tells us, “Emotions, obey your body.”
Do the right thing long enough, and your emotions will eventually catch up with you. Recovery is rooted in doing the right thing, day after day. Those roots of recovery are fed by the way you think and speak. The Bible teaches, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21).
Own your problem. Speak to it. Tell it what to do, rather than letting it dictate your every step. One of my recovery rules is this: “Until you take ownership for your disease, you won’t take responsibility for your recovery.”
So step up to the plate. Sure, you can let your addiction tell your body what to do. But you’re better than that.
Recovery Step: Get under the One who is to be over you, so you can get over what is to be under you.
