Godzilla’s career as a prizefighter began with his first movie, appropriately called Godzilla, in 1954. He went on to star in 38 movies, taking on all monsters who wanted a piece of him. His career included 55 fights, with 45 wins, four draws, and six losses. One of the losses came to a robot, so it didn’t count in the official records.
Godzilla’s other five losses all came against a lesser-known opponent named Mothra. Mothra never had his own movie and was never recognized as a top-ranked heavyweight. But somehow, the colossal sentient larva creature had Godzilla’s number.
Rather than avoid Mothra, Godzilla kept returning to his nemesis, only to lose every time. You’d think his manager would have pulled him aside and said, “Bro, let this Mothra dude go. You can’t handle him. Don’t take fights you know you can’t win!”
We all have a Mothra in our lives. Not an impressive-looking foe, but he has our number. For many of us, Mothra is an addiction. If we are smarter than Godzilla, we learn when to run. We refuse to fight Mothra in our own strength.
Recovery Step: Quit fighting like Godzilla. Take on the mind of Paul, who proclaimed, “I had no confidence in the flesh, but in the Lord” (Philippians 3:3).
