Joe Gilmore, of the Gratitude Lodge, wrote an article titled, “Seven Common Addiction Recovery Mistakes and How to Avoid Them.” He says the most common mistake is thinking you can do it alone. He writes, “A recovery journey requires a positive mindset. You must surround yourself with a supportive community.”
Paul said it like this: “Each of you should look to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:11).
I was recently blessed to speak to the Grace Community Chapel in Teaneck, New Jersey, near New York City. I have been in a lot of churches, but none that demonstrated such a passion for community. It was truly amazing. This Korean-American congregation epitomizes the New Testament model for how to do church together.
Every member of this church is placed into a cell group. It’s automatic. They can’t imagine identifying with a church and not being in a community group.
The Bible agrees. We need each other in order to be well, stay sober, and live the Christian life.
Recovery Step: Get connected to an authentic community.
