“Do you like green eggs and ham?
I do not like them, Sam-I-Am.
I do not like green eggs and ham.
Would you like them here or there?
I would not like them here or there.
I would not like them anywhere.
I do not like green eggs and ham.
I do not like them, Sam-I-Am.
Would you like them in a house?
Would you like them with a mouse?
I do not like them in a house.
I do not like them with a mouse.
I do not like them here or there.
I do not like them anywhere.”
These iconic words were first penned by Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) in 1960. Green Eggs and Ham has sold over 8 million copies. My mom was a big fan. Growing up in our house, we had more Dr. Seuss books than we had bibles.
The point of the story is that the author does not like green eggs and ham. It’s really that simple. And I suspect he is not alone. While I’ve never had green eggs and ham, I can’t help but think that would be a bit yucky.
While Sam-I-Am was best known for what he didn’t like, it is better to be known for what we are actually for. Nearing the end of his life, Joshua said, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
Like most of us, you probably don’t like green eggs and ham. So what is it that you do like?
