All successful recovery includes two words – hard work. Sorry, I wish it wasn’t so. I wish there was a softer, easier way, but there’s not. To stay sober, you need to master things like surrender, going to meetings, and working the Steps. But you also need this:
Hard work.
Derek Jeter said, “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.”
“Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty” (Proverbs 28:19).
Author Brooke Carter cites several benefits of hard work.
- Improved confidence
- Reduced stress
- Increased resilience
- Greater sense of purpose
Let me say it like this. Quit praying for inspiration and start praying for discipline. Then do the hard work that is necessary to get to where you want to be.
Recovery Step: Work as hard on your recovery as you used to work on your addiction.
