It happened one year ago today – at 2:10 pm Eastern Standard Time. It was one of the most painful, gut-wrenching moments of my life. It was at that moment that I held my beloved 15-year-old Westie in my arms for the final time, as she received the injection that ended her life. Putting Heidi down had become our only choice, but that didn’t make it any easier.
I still miss the best little buddy I ever had, every day. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “What does this have to do with recovery?”
Everything.
Having a loving pet brings unlimited comfort and companionship. That is what we call self-care. I’m not saying you need a Westie in order to maintain sobriety (maybe I am). But I am saying you need something that brings you solace, peace, and comfort. And remember, whatever it is that does that is the gift of God (James 1:17).
Recovery Step: Do you want to know who loves you more, your wife or your dog? Put them both in the trunk of your car, drive around the block six times, then open the trunk and see which one is happy to see you! The lesson – get a pet!
