With all famous people, there is something you didn’t know. For example:
- George Washington opened a whiskey distillery.
- Elvis Presley was a natural blonde.
- Tim Allen served two years in jail.
- Nicole Kidman is afraid of butterflies.
It gets worse. Think about your personal heroes. I have had several. Many of them are in heaven now. A couple of them are still living, in their 90s. But here’s the thing. Heroes have faults. I was rocked to my core when I learned some things about one of my heroes after his death.
There is something about your heroes that you don’t know. But don’t let that mess you up. The Bible says, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “All” includes heroes.
I never knew that George Washington ran a distillery, but I still see him as a great leader. I didn’t know that Tim Allen served time in jail, but that doesn’t make him any less funny today.
Let’s get real. You have a story most people don’t know. So do I. But that doesn’t make us less effective tools in the Lord’s toolbox. In fact, it makes us even more useful in the Potter’s hand.
Recovery Step: We’ve all fallen short. That includes you. But that’s okay because Jesus only died for sinners.
