In the iconic sitcom, I Love Lucy, Lucy Ricardo said to her husband Ricky, “Ever since we said ‘I do,’ there are so many things we don’t.”
Nothing is easier to do than drift apart as a married couple. Other interests and responsibilities can crowd out the relationship that matters most, and we put our marriage on the back burner.
God has a better plan. The Bible says, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife” (Genesis 2:24).
What does it mean to “hold fast”? The implication seems to be an enduring commitment to never let go, to do the things that keep the fires burning. Let me suggest a few ways you can do this.
- Say “Thank you” and “I love you.”
- Leave notes.
- Never stop talking.
- Listen intently.
- Have a weekly date night.
- Don’t yell.
- Know when to walk away.
- Touch each other often.
- Turn off technology.
- Be your spouse’s biggest fan.
- Forgive.
Recovery Step: Pick one or two things from the list above and try that today. Your marriage deserves that.
