You want to be happy. We all do. But how do we find happiness? Let’s consider the research.
Studies show that happiness is not simply an outcome of success, but is an ingredient to create success. Dr. Sonja Lyuboirsky explains that a worthwhile life comes from happiness, not the other way around.
Harvard psychologist Jal Ben Shahar writes that happiness is “the overall experience of pleasure and meaning.”
The American Psychological Association defines happiness as feelings of satisfaction, joy, and well-being.
So what does all of this mean? My takeaway is that happiness is a choice. We choose joy; we don’t wait for joy. That is why Paul said, “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4).
If you want to be happy, choose Jesus and choose joy.
Recovery Step: The joy of the Lord is not dependent on circumstances, but choice. Choose the joy of the Lord before things go your way, not after.
