Dave Barry said, “Once again, we come to the holiday season, a deeply religious time that each of us observes, in his own way, by going to the mall of his choice.”
So how do we survive the holidays?
1. Be prepared. I know, I should have written this earlier than three days before Christmas. The time for preparation is coming to a close. So do your best. As the triggers of Christmas approach – travel, time off, and seeing people you haven’t seen in a year, you need to plan ahead.
2. Focus. Don’t be taken in by the trappings of the holidays. They can throw you off stride. In recovery, consistency is key.
3. Pray. I know this sounds obvious, but it is central to your chances of entering 2021 with sobriety. Pray the 3rd Step Prayer, the 7th Step Prayer, and the Serenity Prayer – every day.
Recovery Step: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). Don’t let anything take your eyes off of that this Season.
