A close friend runs the emergency room at a Midwest hospital. He recently told me about a 91-year-old man who came to the ER, not because he was sick, but because his wife was out of town. He didn’t want to spend the weekend alone.
Imagine that – a man who would rather spend the weekend in a hospital room than be alone in his own house.
We were created for communion. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said it well: “The physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy and strength to the believer.”
John the Divine understood the value of Christian connection better than most. After three years of an intimate walk with the Savior, he would be banished to an isolated island for the latter part of his life. John expressed his sentiment sincerely.
“That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us, and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:3).
Recovery Step: You may have to walk through some difficult times on the road to recovery. But you will never have to walk alone.
