America’s independence from Great Britain was essentially secured 242 years ago today. On October 19, 1781, Britain’s Lord Cornwallis surrendered to American General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. The Revolutionary War would soon come to an end.
Did you notice that date – 1781? That is five years after the birth of the United States of America. We were an independent country, but were not living in freedom.
That can be analogous to recovery. The day you declare your independence is not necessarily the day you find freedom.
When you do a disclosure, begin therapy, or set your sobriety date, while those are all great beginnings, none of them end the battle. Declaring your independence from addiction and being truly free are not the same thing.
Recovery Step: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1).
