Are you familiar with the Prayer of Jabez?
“Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, ‘I gave birth to him in pain.’ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request” (1 Chronicles 4:9-10).
Books have been written on this prayer. The gist of it goes like this: “God wants big things for you. If you ask, God will blow you away with incredible blessings!”
This application of the passage misses the most important part of the passage: “Jabez was more honorable than his brothers.”
The word “honorable” means well-respected, held in high regard, maintaining great integrity. God wasn’t answering the prayer of just any man, but a godly man.
Recovery Step: If you want God to bless you tomorrow, become a person of integrity today.
