On July 8, I rode out a hurricane with a hurricane buddy I’ve known for nearly 40 years. We’ve done this many times. This time, it was Hurricane Beryl, which slammed into the Texas coast with gusts over 100 miles per hour. We had the forethought to drive 100 miles from his home near Houston to get to Bay City, Texas, and spend $200 on a hotel room where we knew we’d lose power, so we could be in the eye of the hurricane. We spent several hours outside in the middle of the night, so we could experience the worst of the storm. Fences came down, trees were snapped in half, and we witnessed a massive shingle relocation program at the hotel that night.
The winds peaked at about 4 am. We did what any sane person would do. We sacrificed the modern conveniences of home so we could be close to God.
Power outages. Nowhere to find food. Loss of air conditioning. Roads covered in downed trees and powerlines. It was all part of the experience.
At the heart of every man is a desire for adventure. Of course, we don’t want to be stupid. Stay clear of things like porn, sexually stimulating movies, and time alone with the opposite sex. Stick with something that makes sense. Spend the night in the center of a hurricane.
Recovery Step: Walk with the one who walked with King David. David declared, “Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty” (Psalm 93:4).
