Malcolm Muggeridge offered an example of deep reflection when he wrote A Twentieth-Century Testimony. Among his most profound statements: “When I look back on my life nowadays, which I sometimes do, what strikes me most forcibly about it is that what seemed at the time most significant and seductive, seems now most futile and absurd.”
It was this constant chasing after selfish gratification that Pascal called “licking the earth.”
The Bible calls this “living according to the flesh” (Romans 8:13).
In what ways are you “licking the earth?” In what areas are you guided by your greed, rather than by your God? Are you living according to your flesh or your faith?
Recovery Step: You have lived too much of your life “according to the flesh.” Determine that, starting today, things are going to be different.
