Epictetus said, “We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them.”
Life must be lived in the moment. Every day, you will face challenges that can make or break you. British theologian John Blanchard nailed it: “For daily needs, there’s daily grace. For sudden needs, there’s sudden grace. For overwhelming needs, there will be overwhelming grace.”
For addicts, acting out is often a reaction to a sudden crisis or trigger. We feel overwhelmed and helpless. Before we know it, we have given in, rather than tapping into the resources God has provided.
This promise is worth memorizing: “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8).
Recovery Step: When your circumstances trigger you to act out, turn to God instead.
