Let’s talk about logic, emotions, and self-control.
Dr. Jonathan Heidt has concluded, “Psychology tells us that the brain consistently tricks you into thinking your logic is in control, but generally, it is not. You are being driven by emotions and instinctual drives which your logical brain then rationalizes. This gives the appearance of the logical mind controlling the subconscious drives. We work hard at gaining self-control, often failing, because of this illusion.”
There are two points to be taken from this. First, emotions trump logic. Second, self-control is a commodity we must all pray for, strive for, and never quit pursuing.
The Bible weighs in.
Old Testament: “A person without self-control is like a city with broken down walls” (Proverbs 25:28).
New Testament: “The fruit of the Spirit is . . . self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).
Recovery Step: Never stop pursuing self-control.
