Augustine said, “Thou has created us for thyself, and our heart is not quiet until it rests in Thee.”
That quote should be taped onto the bathroom mirror of every person in recovery. When we remember that we were not only created by God, but for God, we get an idea of how special we are. Yes, we can spend our time viewing porn and acting out, but why would we want to? Knowing God went to the trouble to create us for his own benefit puts a real premium on our worth.
The psalmist said it like this: “Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture” (Psalm 100:3).
Because we were created for God, I am left with three simple reflections.
- Start every day by asking how you can live for him.
- Live every day seeking to fulfill his purpose for your life.
- End every day with fresh surrender.
Recovery Step: Say it with me. “I was created by God. But more importantly, I was created for God. And that changes everything.”
