Married couples often keep financial secrets from their spouse.
According to a study in 2022, financial secrets adversely affect 75 percent of all marriages. A poll by CreditCards.com found the following:
- 32 percent spent more than their partners knew.
- 9 percent held secret debt.
- 9 percent kept a secret credit card.
- 8 percent had a secret checking account.
- 8 percent had a secret savings account.
Secrets are never a good thing within a marriage. And eventually, the secrets always come out. “For nothing will be hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light” (Luke 8:17).
Not keeping secrets is a good step in the right direction. But I like what author Edgar Watson Howe wrote, in Country Town Sayings: “The man who can keep a secret may be wise, but he is not half as wise as the man with no secrets to keep.”
Recovery Step: I leave you with three words – no more secrets.
