“God is good, God is great, let us thank him for our food. Amen.”
That was my first prayer. My family was not very religious, but we did pray before every meal. And that was our daily prayer. My brother and I took turns, day to day. But the prayer never changed.
After I came to faith as a teenager, I often looked back on that little prayer with a sense of mockery. But it occurs to me that this little prayer isn’t a bad place to start. Those first three words are gold.
“God is good.”
It is because God is good that I am here today, that I am about to celebrate 40 years of marriage, that I have the best son and daughter-in-law ever, that I have food on the table and recovery in my heart.
Should this be your only prayer for the day? Of course not. But it’s a great place to start. Say it with me – “God is good.”
Recovery Step: “No one is good, except God alone” (Mark 10:18). Let that settle in this morning.
