Recently, I attended a different church in my area for one reason. I love the drummer. He’s the most incredible drummer I’ve ever heard. I have gone to hear him play multiple times throughout Texas and now Florida.
The drummer is my son.
But on this particular Sunday, there was actually more to the service than the drums. The pastor preached a pretty good message. Not that I really paid much attention. When he read the passage for the day, I got stuck on that passage. I sat there, reading it over and over and over. The power of the words gripped my heart and they still have not let go.
Let me share that passage today.
Mark 11:12-13 “The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves.”
Five brutal words: “He found nothing but leaves.”
The fig tree looked great, as it was full of leaves. But there was no fruit.
Let that sink in. The Christian life is not measured by the fullness of our leaves, but the bounty of our fruit.
Recovery Step: Focus less on how you look and more on the fruit you are bearing. And if you’d like to hear the best drummer in the world, give me a call.
