It is my favorite Old Testament passage on addiction.
When the families of Abraham and Lot had become too numerous for them all to stay together, Abraham gave Lot the first shot at finding a new place where his people could settle. Then we read this troubling verse: “Lot lived among the cities of the plains and pitched his tents near Sodom” (Genesis 13:12).
You know what came next. “Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord” (Genesis 13:13).
Of course, Lot would have never pitched his tents in Sodom, just near Sodom. But that’s how it works. What we go near today, we enter tomorrow. Today’s social media browse becomes tomorrow’s outreach to an old girlfriend. Today’s Google search becomes tomorrow’s use of pornography. And today’s flirtation becomes tomorrow’s affair.
Recovery Step: You know where your version of Sodom is. Don’t even glance in that direction.
