Such was the case on this date in history, 1781. Sir William Herschel observed the planet Uranus for the first time on March 13, 1781, from the garden in his backyard at 19 New King Street in Bath Somerset, England. After processing what he had seen, he reported his discovery publicly on April 26, about six weeks later.
Why did he wait six weeks? Herschel wanted to be sure that what he thought he had seen was really there. In fact, he didn’t accept the idea that this was indeed a planet until he had seen it six times, using a telescope of his own making.
Sometimes, good news takes time to process. “Did I really find a new planet?” Or this one – “Did I really stay sober for 30 days?” With God, all things are possible.
