“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality” (Ephesians 5:3).
Are you familiar with the Modesto Manifesto? That was the agreement that Billy Graham and his inner circle made with each other in 1949. Among other things, it included a commitment that none of them would ever be alone with a woman other than their wife – even on an elevator, at lunch, or in a car.
For 75 years, this has served the Graham organization well.
What does it mean to avoid sexual immorality? That’s pretty easy – no porn, no masturbation, no staring at the opposite sex, no sex outside of marriage.
But what does it mean to avoid even a hint of sexual immorality? That one is a little tougher. Let me suggest a few things:
- Don’t text the opposite sex without your spouse’s knowledge.
- Don’t laugh at sexual innuendo.
- Turn the channel when sexual content comes on.
- Don’t sit next to the opposite sex at church.
Recovery Step: Ask God how to obey this verse, then do what he says – not even a hint of sexual immorality.
