We all remember the innkeeper in Bethlehem who told Mary and Joseph that there was no room for them in the inn. The innkeeper has earned a bad reputation because of this, but I wonder if this nameless figure in history may be symbolic of some of us. There was no room in the inn because Mary and Joseph were not expected.
Let that sink in. Mary and Joseph were not expected.
On a recent vacation, Beth and I checked into a hotel. The man in line ahead of us was not given a room for one simple reason. He had no reservation. He wasn’t expected. He didn’t prepare in advance. He just showed up, hoping for the best.
But this one was on the innkeeper. He missed out on a story he could have told his grandchildren one day: “Guess who stayed in my hotel 50 years ago?”
It is when we expect God to show up that he does something special. Are you expecting God to show up on your doorstep this Christmas Day? If you expect nothing, that’s what you’ll get. If you expect something big, that’s what you’ll get.
Recovery Step: Make room in your inn for the expected One today.
