I’ve heard many guys say something like this, in the face of their strongest sexual temptations. “I’m just going to do it one more time, so I can get it out of my system.”
Here’s the problem with that thinking. By doing what you think will get it out of your system, you are really getting it more into your system. You are only making things worse.
You are creating new triggers, memories, and fantasies. By returning to your drug “one last time,” you are really becoming very much like the dog that Solomon wrote about in the Book of Wisdom.
“As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly” (Proverbs 26:11).
There is only one way to begin getting it “out of your system.” Quit doing it. Quit creating new neuropathways to the same old place. You will never reprogram your brain by doing the same thing that got you into this mess in the first place.
Recovery Step: Get it “out of your system” by simply not doing it anymore!
